About this class

Welcome to the Year 5 page

Year 5 marks the beginning of UKS2, which means our children are nearing the end of their primary school journey! There is so much to look forward to this year: an exciting curriculum, opportunities to explore our local community and lots of practical learning opportunities. We will also aim to develop the children's independence with their learning which will stand them in good stead for Year 6 and beyond!

Your teachers in Year 5 are Mr Williams and Mrs Coulton. Mrs Taylor, Mrs Godfrey and Mrs Gee are our teaching assistants and they help to support children with their learning across both classes.

If you wish to contact us then please feel free to e-mail, ring or catch us on the playground after school.

General information

PE Days

PE is currently on a Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning, but this may change later in the year.

Homework

Reading homework is given out on a Friday and is expected in on the following Friday.  It consists of comprehension questions that the children should be able to answer mostly on their own.  Maths homework will also be set on a Friday and will be on Doodle Maths online. If they are finding any of their homework too difficult, please encourage them to speak to their teacher before the homework due date.  The children will also be expected to practise their spellings and read at least 3 times to an adult – this reading should be acknowledged and signed off by an adult in their reading record.

Our expectation is that the children should be able to complete their homework on their own and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.  If they do not complete the homework at home then there will be a homework club on Friday lunchtimes in order for them to complete it.

Planning Days (PPA)

Mrs Hooper (5W) and Mrs Cowin (5C) will cover Year 5 for part of every Friday. During these sessions the children are taught PHSE, RE and Art as well as Maths and literacy skills.

🎲 Dungeons and Dragons - Act 3 Our group of adventurers stocked up on supplies and a few interesting spell scrolls from a small, failing buisness. After snacking on some questionable bread rolls and meat products, the party headed towards Tharley's farm to investigate the disappearing sheep and mysterious goings on. The party discovered a rather terrified Tharley who had locked himself in his home ... he soon became too overwhelmed and shut the door in our heroes faces. Navi used a Scroll of Animal Speaking and suddenly ... one of Tharley's sheep began to make sense - introducing the extremely impressive, rather magnificent and definitely-a-wizard-not-a-sorcerer-there's-a-DIFFERENCE NAVI - the one and only Zephyrus. Something baaaaaaaa'd this way comes ... 🐑

In Foundation Stage we have been learning about Ramadan and why it is important to some Muslims. It is a time to reflect on being the best person you can be, like being kind and thoughtful. A time to be thankful and to help others. Ramadan begins with the sighting of a new crescent moon. We have been making sun catchers in the shape of lanterns. the lantern represents light guiding the way and in some countries, it is traditional to illuminate the streets at night during the holy month of Ramadan.

🎲 Dungeons and Dragons - Scene 2 The spotlight was on The High Society this afternoon; the guild had ventured into the woods three days prior after investigating the strange occurrences at Yellowdale ... but so far, they have found no evidence of mischief. That was until they awoke around their campfire to find a member of their party missing! The Society decided to follow Nisha's footprints and head west - after tracking her steps (and licking some sticks - who knew survival skills could be so entertaining?), Infernus made some keen observations and noticed that they were all being watched. Nisha suddenly started shouting for help! The group quickly dashed through the woodlands and discovered that Nisha had rather foolishly fallen down a trap; sensibly, the society remembered they had rope in their satchel and heaved Nisha to freedom. They are still being watched ... 🤯
